Museum of rope and old trades - Orciano

Address

Via C. Betti - Orciano

Description

The Museum of Rope and Old Trades was founded to recuperate the historical memory of the traditional trades moulded the town's image through time.

After the reception area (with three items that symbolise the museum - a kiln trolley, a coil of rope and a piece of farming equipment), is the first museum room, which is dedicated to brick making.  Historical and photographic documents from the Fornace di Orciano brick makers are shown side by side with examples of finished products and brickwork (one-, two- and three-brick walls, cement core wall, full arch; ceiling covered with tiles and bent tiles).  At the end of the visit, an educational DVD about the production process is shown on a giant screen.

The second room in the museum presents and illustrates another typical trade from Orciano: rope maker.  Local rope makers were known throughout the area for their skill and also used by fishermen from Fano to make the rigging for their fishing boats.  After a presentation of the raw materials used in rope making, the exhibition moves on to the tools of the trade (forms, spinning wheels and garbini) shown together with explanatory panels and photographs.  The whole rope-making machine is then shown ("manzola" and rakes), with ropes actually being made, together with a vast range of various types of rope.
The presentation of farming items and equipment serves to fit the whole museum collection within the rural context within which all the various local crafts and trades were to be found.

A separate room is dedicated to sculptor Gị Pomodoro, who was born here and whose work "Sole Deposto" stands in the small square where his house used to be, and where the visit concludes.
