Via Roma, s.n. - ex-church of S. Maria del Soccorso
On the morning of 25 August 1944, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, accompanied by General Alexander (commander of the 8th British Army) went up to the castle of Montemaggiore to watch the arrayment of the troops in the Metauro Valley as they prepared to attack the Gothic Line. That same night, Operation "Olive" was begun, leading to the breakthrough of the German army's last defences in Italy.
The museum illustrates this event with photographs, written accounts, diaries, official documents, and military mementoes and equipment of the period, recuperating the memory of events which made history in the last century. Of particular significance is the photo in which Churchill and Alexander, taken from behind, are sitting on a rough bench, looking out on the Metauro Valley, which opens before them with it orderly rows of vines at intervals on land where the wheat has just been harvested. Tradition would have it that this was the site of the battle in which the Carthaginian Hasdrubal was killed while trying to bring fresh troops to his brother Hannibal (Battle of the Metauro) in 207 B. C.
